Carbon Neutral Surfaces

Florim's Carbon Neutral Surfaces

We are a B Corp company, and our choices are always aimed at creating more value for people and the environment.

We continue to invest in reducing emissions generated by our activities. Until technological innovation allows us to eliminate them completely, we have decided to voluntarily offset the CO2 emissions of our CarbonZero collections.

This is the origin of Florim's Carbon Neutral surfaces project, which offsets all the CO2 emitted throughout their lifecycle.

How did we do it?

We measure

We have calculated the environmental impact of our surfaces throughout the product life cycle (*) because we want to reduce all CO2 emissions, including those that occur outside the company.

We reduce

To reduce the emissions from our activities, we have reduced the use of natural resources and invested in making the production process more sustainable: up to 100% in terms of water, electricity, and raw waste recovery.

We compensate

We promote a positive impact: the CarbonZero collections compensate for (**) all the CO2 emitted during their lifecycle by supporting certified projects that produce clean energy in developing countries.

(*) Certified EPD data – registration number EPDITALY0462
(**) Compensation is achieved through the purchase of CER (Certified Emission Reductions) carbon credits on the CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) registry of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change).
For the calculation, a value of 19.05 kg CO2-eq / m2 was used with an average density of 21.97 kg/m2 – a value calculated based on the GWP total (EPD Florim, which considers the entire product lifecycle), integrating maintenance and cleaning activities assuming a lifespan of 60 years.
Florim is committed to the annual monitoring, reduction, and compensation of greenhouse gas emissions from the CarbonZero Collections.

FAQ

"CarbonZero" is Florim's Carbon Neutral surface project that compensates for all the CO2 emitted during their lifecycle by supporting renewable energy projects in developing countries.

Florim wants to protect our planet and contribute to combating climate change. For this reason, it has been investing for many years to minimize its environmental impact. However, current technologies do not allow for the production of ceramics with zero CO2 emissions; therefore, the company has decided to voluntarily offset the emissions it cannot yet avoid.

Florim studies the entire lifecycle of its surfaces, from creation to disposal, to understand how much CO2 is emitted. This study is based on a certified data called EPD (Environmental Product Declaration).

A carbon credit represents the reduction or removal of one ton of CO2 equivalent from the atmosphere. Certified carbon credits are a tool used by companies in climate change mitigation strategies to offset residual greenhouse gas emissions. “Certified” carbon credits (certified by a third-party entity) are the only ones that translate into actual greenhouse gas emission compensation. Purchasing carbon credits means supporting regenerative environmental projects.

Florim purchases CER (Certified Emission Reductions) carbon credits from the CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) registry of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). Each credit represents the reduction or removal of one ton of CO2 from the atmosphere.

Florim chose to support projects that generate renewable energy in alignment with its business strategy, which embraces a planet-benefit paradigm (Florim is the first B Corp certified ceramics industry). Renewable energies are the solution to accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels. Investing in and helping developing countries transition to the necessary energy transformation for achieving climate neutrality is an important choice for Florim to protect our planet before climate change becomes irreversible.

Florim has chosen to support a Wind Farm in India: Enercon Wind Farm (Hindustan) Ltd in Karnataka (CDM Project 1259).
